Furnace Not Working? 6 Common Issues and What to Do

When the weather cools down, your furnace becomes one of the most important systems in your home or building. But what happens when it suddenly stops working, or starts blowing cold air? Before you panic, here are six common furnace issues and what they might mean.

1. Thermostat Issues

Sometimes the problem isn’t with the furnace at all—it’s the thermostat. If it’s not set to “heat” or the batteries are dead, the furnace won’t kick in. Double-check the settings before assuming there’s a mechanical issue.

2. Dirty Filters

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut down. Replacing your filters regularly (every 1–3 months) helps keep your system running efficiently and extends its life.

3. Pilot Light or Ignition Problems

For older furnaces with a standing pilot light, a draft or buildup can cause it to go out. Newer models use electronic ignition, which can also fail over time. If your furnace isn’t firing up, this could be the culprit.

4. Tripped Breaker or Blown Fuse

A loss of power may be the result of a tripped circuit breaker. Check your panel and reset the breaker if necessary. If it continues to trip, call a professional—there may be a deeper electrical issue.

5. Blower Motor Failure

If your furnace turns on but no air is coming through the vents, a faulty blower motor could be to blame. You may also hear strange noises or notice reduced airflow before it completely fails.

6. Faulty Flame Sensor

This safety device ensures the burners are igniting properly. If it’s dirty or malfunctioning, it may shut the system down to prevent unsafe operation. Cleaning or replacing it usually solves the issue.
